Hi Oppo,
Tomorrow is my A- Exam, which for those of you fortunate enough not to be in academia, is (at least in my field) an oral exam on everything I should know to be considered an expert in the field.
So before they can give my my PhD, i need to answer to five angry old professors for three hours while they ask me everything i’ve learned since 2008... needless to say my brain is sore and i’m in one hell of a state right now.
So to make me feel better lets talk about CascaZilla, my 78 PUCH moped. What do you think I should do to her? Heres a photo from last season
I’ve since replaced the limp dick air filter with a custom air box and re-done the electrical.
modifications so far have been almost exclusively power related. I bumped her up from a 50cc to ~70cc, added a high-high compression head (pushing 200psi!), hemispherical piston, ported her, 15mm intake, super nice full reverberation chamber side bleed exhaust with adjustable back pressure end bleeder. New shocks etc.
For this spring i did the better airbox, i’m working on dialing in the timing just right with a new stator and points. Carb has been thoroughly cleaned.
I’m thinking about changing the seat somehow, putting on some hydraulic shocks, painting the back fender white. I dunno. What do you guys think?
Right now she tops out at 45 mph, which is a little over double her top speed stock. I had her set up for about 52mph previously but she had no low end at all and I couldn’t do hills for shit which is important in my parts.
cheers

looks like you did everything I would have done to it. I have seen 60 out of one before with heavier mods but it wasn’t as reliable as it should have been

generally there is a heavy speed:reliability trade off, i mean back when she only did 20mph you could have run her off water and set the timing with a baseball bat
Now little changes in humidity will make the points dwell and the jetting in the carb needs to constantly be readjusted with temperature, i don;t think i’d modify much more because i DD her in the summer and i need it to start at least 4/5 days of the week, which can sometimes seem like a lofty goal.
Cheers

Yeah I have 4 DS60’s that go around 50 out of the box with the 3 speed tranny, but that is more scooter like although you could get pedals as an option. I also had a non twingle hardtail 150 that did about the same speed!

I learned to ride a motorcycles on a 50cc Puch, sold by sears at the time in the early 70’s. Your modifications make me simultaneously happy and sad (that I we didn’t do those. Though, I have to admit, the end game in motorcycles in the fam was a 750cc Triumph Trident. I swear my ass is flat from that thing.)

Theyre a riot. Here in NY i don’t need insurance on it (which is a goddamn fortune when you love on a college campus) its easy to park, and cheap and rugged so I don;t worry when drunk students knock it over during the night.
When i’m not working for the university anymore i’ll get a proper motorcycle, but there is something so wonderful about riding a slow bike fast.
I’ve been eyeballing the GROM, depending on ease of modifiability, as the spiritual successor to like the Cub. Make myself a modern trail 90

I’d go for a Suzuki Burgman 650 before a GROM, but the GROM images do have more babes, so tossup?

Well the burgman is a scooter, and i’m not much for scooters. I don’t really like the seating position.

In the world of motorcycles, GROM is by definition one, but I know of a bunch of drivers that wouldn’t agree with that.
After watching commuters do 80 mph down I280 in the SF area on these overpowered Lazy-Boy’s, it does have some appeal to me (but then, I don’t care what I look like anymore - I just need function.)

Oh i’m not concerned with looks, my DD has pedals man.
I just actually don’t like the seating position on scooters. I’m 6’2 and having my feet right under me with short handlebars is bad news. Bike or motorcycle position is much better.
You can't see it in this pic but I have a foot peg on the other side too, so on longer rides i can put my right leg back and keep my left leg on the pedal all the way back. Its much more comfortable
